The pre-Thanksgiving weekend offered extraordinary earnings at the US Box Office with Wicked and Gladiator 2 sharing the spoils. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the American box office preceding the always prosperous Thanksgiving period was dominated by two films highly anticipated by the public. Waiting for Moana 2 next weekend, this past weekend was the musical Wicked (part 1) and the blockbuster Gladiator 2, respectively first and second in the rankings. The Universal musical inspired by the famous Broadway show collected an estimated $114 million in the three days of cinema in the US, slightly below the pre-release estimates (120 million).
Statistics in hand, Wicked represents one of the best debuts in the history of the US Box Office regarding the musical genre and one of the best debuts of the entire 2024. Globally, the film reached 164.2 million. Analysts' estimates have confirmed the prevalence of women in theaters - Wicked offers a massive female presence in its cast - but also excellent reviews from critics and audiences, with the latter assigning an excellent CinemaScore "A". It will be interesting to evaluate its holding up in the upcoming Christmas period.
Gladiator 2 | Excellent debut for Ridley Scott's blockbuster
The debut of Gladiator 2 earned Paramount Pictures a gross of 55.5 million dollars, again below pre-release estimates (60/65 million). Contrary to what happened with Wicked, for Ridley Scott's historical film the majority of the audience was male. Statistics in hand, this box office represents the largest ever in Denzel Washington's very long history. Worldwide, the film has already exceeded 200 million (221 million to be precise). Critics' reviews in this case were not extraordinary (only 71% on Rotten Tomatoes), while they saw the approval of the public who gave the film an 84% (only B on CinemaScore).
US Box Office | Other Films
In third place is the Christmas film Red One, whose new box office was 13.28 million dollars, with a drop compared to the opening weekend of 59%, and a total of 52.9 million. The film has currently collected 117.1 million globally, not much for a blockbuster with a budget of over 250 million, a detail that does not seem to worry Amazon, which seems to be focusing on the Christmas holidays, but also on the next release on Prime Video. The Sony/Marvel comic book film “Venom: The Last Dance” finally grossed another $4 million in fifth place, for a total of $133.82 million at the US box office, and a figure of just under $450 million globally.
