In its almost thirty years of serialization, One Piece has given us so many unforgettable characters, and even today Master Eiichirō Oda never ceases to surprise his readers with new ingenious ideas. But did you know that his inspiration for one of the most popular characters is none other than a Quentin Tarantino movie? One of the most beloved members of the Straw Hat Crew is Sanji, the ship's cook. He is a character characterized by his good looks and gallant manners, especially with women, towards whom he behaves in a refined and chivalrous manner.
These elements, for a long time, made One Piece fans think that Oda was inspired by a famous Hollywood actor in vogue at the time: the young Leonardo DiCaprio, who in the same year as his debut in the manga had consecrated his success with the general public with the role of Jack Dawson in James Cameron's Titanic. In reality, this theory was denied by Oda himself, even if it is not that far from reality. The author, in fact, revealed his real inspiration, declaring that yes, Sanji is inspired by a character from Hollywood cinema, but not DiCaprio. Instead,
it is Mr. Pink, played by Steve Buscemi in Reservoir Dogs (1992), Quentin Tarantino's debut film. «I know that many people thought that the inspiration was DiCaprio. But in reality, Sanji had a much more unusual model – explained the author in an old Q&A with One Piece fans -. Well, maybe I shouldn't go so far as to use the word "model", but I hope I've conveyed a part of the character and personality of this character. This is Steve Buscemi in the movie Reservoir Dogs.
Although the two characters are quite different - one remains morally ambiguous throughout the story, while the other is guided by an unshakable moral -, this is certainly an example of how cinema has influenced the creation of one of the most popular manga in history. A manga that, remember, we will soon see again on the small screen, with the second season of the live-action Netflix (as well as with the historical anime still in progress).
