It has been revealed that the new Predator film, Predator: Badlands, will be the first in the series to feature a predator as the main character. Director Dan Trachtenberg, who will be reprising his role from the previous film, Prey (2022), confirmed this to Empire in the UK. As previously reported, this film is not a sequel to Predator: The Prey, but a story about sisters traveling through the wilderness of the near future facing their terrifying past.
The lead role will be played by Elle Fanning from the Maleficent series, but the director said, "The creature (the predator) will be at the center and lead the whole thing." "It's a complicated character, but there's something about it that moves everyone's hearts. It was very challenging and interesting to create a being that you can empathize with, but is also very terrifying." The idea came from the previous film, Predator: The Prey. The desire to "push the boundaries of the series" and "make another essential movie that allows the audience to root for a hero who is rarely rooted for in a new way" led to the concept of "getting the audience to root for the Predator."
A similar example is the idea behind "Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire" (2024), which tried to tell a story centered on monsters rather than humans. Details of the plot and characters are currently unknown, but the lead actress Fanning will play multiple characters in one role. "I faced a lot of challenges both in terms of drama, physicality, and practicality," said the director. The movie "Predator: Badlands" is scheduled to be released in the United States on November 7, 2025. Director Trachtenberg is also preparing another top-secret new "Predator" movie, which is expected to be released before "Badlands."
