Stranger Things is heading towards its conclusion with the highly anticipated fifth season which will close the narrative arcs of its young protagonists that we have learned to know and appreciate since the first season arrived in 2016. To date we still know little about the plot of the new episodes, however, the announced title of a particular episode could reveal the existence of a new alternative dimension beyond the “Upside Down”. One of the titles of the fifth season, “Escape from Camazotz“, has, in fact, ignited the imagination of fans who are well aware of the references to the famous role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons openly shown throughout the series.

In the lore of D&D, Camazotz is the deity of the Bats of the underground world of Olman, over which he holds great influence, and is associated with diseases and plagues. This entity hails from the World of Greyhawk, one of the very first Dungeons & Dragons settings, manifests itself as a large bat surrounded by a black cloud, and is not hesitant to show itself as a humanoid bat to its followers. Does this mean that Eleven and her friends will find themselves facing a formidable new opponent? A Redditor has offered an intriguing new hint that could shed some light on the episode's title.

The plot of the 1962 science fiction novel, A Wrinkle in Time, features a section about the planet Camazotz which is under threat from the Black Thing, which seems to be the source of all evil in the universe. In the novel's narrative, this is an evil dark shadow that covers the entire planet and controls its population using mind control. The book explains that the Black Thing is the evil that the children are facing in their quest to find Mr. Murray, the children's father who mysteriously disappeared earlier.

So, while “Camazotz” could very well be a new, horrific monster that will appear in Stranger Things season 5, there’s also the possibility that it could be a new alternate dimension inspired by the well-known novel. A theory is also supported by the title of the episode in question, which seems to clearly refer to a place and not to the creature of the same name. At the moment we don’t have much information on the plot of the new episodes, except that they will be set in 1987. To find out more, we just have to wait for the fifth season of Strangers Things, which will land on Netflix in 2025.
