With Hot Frosty, available from November 13, 2024, Netflix continues its appointment with Christmas rom-coms. Lacey Chabert (Gretchen Wieners of Mean Girls) plays Kathy, a widow who has lost all hope in love. Christmas is, however, upon us, and it could change her life. One evening, in fact, she gives a red scarf - which she doesn't know is magic - to a snowman who has human features and, as if by magic, comes to life. Jack (this is the name chosen by the character played by Dustin Milligan) soon becomes loved by everyone in town: he is cheerful and generous, makes himself available to everyone, and helps Kathy renovate her house. But can there be love between a woman and a snowman?

Hot Frosty – A Christmas Magic: the banality of a genre that continues to please

There is very little to tell in Hot Frosty – A Christmas Magic, if not a classic love story. We are in a town called Hope Springs, where Kathy lives, a widow who has recently lost her husband and the owner of a coffee shop. Even though she is not in the mood to celebrate Christmas, the woman does not lose her smile and is kind to her customers, so much so that they decide to give him a gift: a warm scarf with magical powers. And so, one night, after wrapping it around a snowman, it transforms into an attractive young man named Jack. Kathy thinks he's a slightly crazy vagabond and decides to welcome him into her house, not believing that he can really be a snowman. Christmas, however, is approaching, and anything can happen: a mutual sympathy is born between the two, and Kathy will have to decide whether to let herself be enveloped by this feeling again and finally melt her heart to the handsome stranger.

Hot Frosty – A Christmas Magic is a simple holiday-themed rom-com that doesn't add anything new to the genre. The Netflix film is crowded with jokes that aren't always successful, and often entrusted to two comedians: Craig Robinson and Joe Lo Truglio (already seen in Brooklyn Nine-Nine), respectively in the role of the new sheriff of the city and his deputy, who begin to investigate the mysterious Jack, who appeared in the city just as if by magic. Fans looking for curious quotes will find plenty to sink their teeth into. In Hot Frosty, there are not only references to one of the most famous scenes of Pretty Woman, as well as an ending in the style of It's a Wonderful Life, but Lacey Chabert also teases Lindsay Lohan, her former colleague in Mean Girls with a nice sketch: "How strange, she looks like a girl I went to school with."

Hot Frosty - A Christmas Carol: evaluation and conclusion

Like all Christmas rom-coms, Hot Frosty - A Christmas Carol is a predictable film, full of clichés, and pop culture references with a rather banal love story. All these elements are part of the genre and cannot be changed, but it pleases die-hard lovers of this type of film: Christmas romantic comedies are now a must for Netflix, which plays by bringing romance, a pinch of magic and a few smiles to the screen, always maintaining a language suitable for all families and never vulgar. Lacey Chabert is a veteran of the genre, having worked on several Hallmark-themed movies in recent years, so she feels right at home in Hot Frosty.
