Some fans may have wondered the reason for this clear difference and George R.R. Martin has intervened to clarify the matter. Game of Thrones is hands down one of the most important and successful series of the last decade, a phenomenon that has given the small screen a fantasy imagery that we will carry with us for many generations, also thanks to the spin-offs already released such as House of the Dragon or those in the launch pad. It all started with the novels by George R.R. Martin, which however have a different name.
As is known, in fact, A Game of Thrones is only the first volume of the cycle A Song of Ice and Fire, composed of four other books already published and two others that in theory have yet to see the light - but considering that 13 years have passed since the last A Dance with Dragons, fans have definitely lost hope. Each volume is in turn composed of two or three books, but for the HBO series, it was decided to summarize everything under a single title, namely Game of Thrones.
Do you know the reason for this clear change? The author himself reiterated it in a recent interview: the choice was obviously made by HBO, which must have probably conducted internal tests with negative results: «It's an interesting thing, to think about how iconic that phrase has become: game of something. I see it everywhere, even on TV. I feel flattered but also amused, it's not something I would have imagined». He also added: «What happens in Game of Thrones is not necessarily going to happen in A Song of Ice and Fire and vice versa».
Indeed, “Game of Thrones” is a much more immediate and captivating title, which also makes it clear the slant that was wanted to give to the series. HBO didn't focus too much on the clash between good and evil, between the Targaryen prophecy and the advance of the Night King, but on the more fantasy aspect of the story in a nutshell. On the contrary, it put the Iron Throne and its conquest at the center, insisting on the political and more realistic side, therefore. What do you think? Was it the right choice by the production, or would you have preferred the original title of the saga? Tell us your opinion, as always, in the comments.
