With the end of the show, League of Legends fans seem to already have clear ideas about what they would like to see in the next project by Riot Games With the last two episodes available on Netflix since yesterday, the narrative cycle of Arcane has come to a close at the culmination of two seasons universally acclaimed by critics and by old and new fans of League of Legends. The success of the show by Riot Games, however, seems to have opened the doors to many other future adaptations set in Runeterra.
Confirmation came in recent weeks from the mouth of the co-creator of the series Christian Linke, who left little doubt about the intention to bring new stories set in the same universe to the small screen: «Arcane is just the first. We are working on a lot of new projects, a lot of new stories from all the different regions and characters of our IP.» With the end of Arcane Season 2, fans have begun to speculate about what Riot Games’ next TV project could be about, which could focus on one of the most infamous events in League of Legends lore.
We are talking about the event known as “Helia’s Ruin,” a catastrophe that affected Runeterra on a large scale, leading to the destruction of Helia and the Blessed Isles, thus paving the way for the fall of the Kingdom of Camavor. The story was told in Ruination: A League of Legends Novel, a novel by Anthony Reynolds that marks the literary debut of the successful franchise. The core of the story focuses on the tragedy of young Viego, the heir to the throne of Camavor, a kingdom devoted to conquest whose army brings death and destruction to every territory it occupies. Viego, now king, was crowned despite not being ready to take up the office left to him by his father due to his selfish and haughty character, and therefore easily influenced.
After becoming king, Viego fell in love with a peasant girl named Isolde, immediately making her his bride. Tragically, during an attack on the young king, Isolde is wounded by a poisoned blade that infects her with an illness for which there is no cure. The idea of losing his beloved, however, causes Viego to fall into a self-destructive abyss into which he risks dragging the entire kingdom. Kalista, a warrior and general of the army as well as the niece and newly appointed advisor to the king, wants to stop the desire for conquest of the Kingdom of Camavor, and to prevent the situation from worsening she decided to go to the Blessed Isles, a place where it is believed the only hope of salvation for Isolde is hidden.
Unfortunately, she died before Kalista returned, and Viego, determined to save his beloved's life, set out for the Blessed Isles, whose people refused to grant passage to the king and his entourage. He then ordered his soldiers to open the way to reach the miraculous Waters of Life. Viego then managed to bring Isolde back to life, who, however, was nothing more than a shadow of the woman he loved. However, the resurrection process devastated the Isles, transforming all its inhabitants into malevolent specters. Viego's tragedy is undoubtedly one of the most important events in the League of Legends lore, combining tragedy with the typical epic elements of traditional fantasy.
A narrative arc centered on the king willing to do anything to save his beloved, even bringing destruction to the rest of the world, and on the heroes who remain entangled in it could be the winning card for a possible future television adaptation that could let us discover how the Blessed Isles became known as the Shadow Islands. set thousands of years before the events of Arcane. In the meantime, we remind you that the last two episodes of the second and final season of the series have been available for streaming on Netflix since yesterday.
