Sequel premieres in October 2025

Mortal Kombat 2 will premiere only in 2025 and will have Karl Urban cast to play the actor and martial artist Johnny Cage, the main absence in the first film. Now the film has gained the first image of Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, showing her range in more detail. Martyn Ford (Fast and Furious 9) will play the feared villain Shao Kahn, who invades the peaceful kingdom of Edenia and transforms it into the feared Outworld. Ana Thu Nguyen (The Spy Who Never Dies) will be Sindel, the former queen of Edenia who marries Shao Kahn, and Desmond Chiam (Falcon and the Winter Soldier) will be King Jerrod, the former monarch of Edenia.
Damon Herriman (Mindhunter) will finally play the enigmatic sorcerer Quan Chi, who travels between the various worlds of the franchise. Adeline Rudolph will play Kitana, the princess of Edenia who allies with Liu Kang and the forces of Earth against Shao Kahn. In addition, several names from the cast of the original film have been confirmed for the sequel, such as Tadanobu Asano (Raiden), Mehcad Brooks (Jax), Ludi Lin (Liu Kang), Chin Han (Shang Tsung), Joe Tasim (Bi-Han/Sub-Zero), Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion), Max Huang (Kung Lao), as well as the protagonists Lewis Tan (Cole Yong), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade) and Josh Lawson (Kano).

After being the biggest debut of 2021 on HBO Max, Mortal Kombat will gain a sequel. A sequel to the live-action adaptation of NetherRealm’s games is in development at Warner Bros. studio New Line. Jeremy Slater will write the script, Simon McQuoid will return to direct, and Ed Boon, the creator of the franchise, will serve as creative consultant. James Wan and Michael Clear of Atomic Monster and Todd Garner of Broken Road Productions will produce alongside McQuoid and E. Bennett Walsh.
Nearly 26 years after its first film directed by Paul W.S. Anderson (Monster Hunter and Resident Evil), the new adaptation of Mortal Kombat premiered simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters in the US. We saw classic names like Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), Jax Briggs (Mehcad Brooks), Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Kung Lao (Max Huang), Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) and Mileena (Sisi Stringer) in the film, which adapts NetherRealm's hit games. Mortal Kombat 2 premieres in theaters on October 24, 2025.
