There is finally a release date for Chapter 1 of Horizon: An American Saga, a western saga starring and directed by Kevin Costner, star of Yellowstone, which premiered in North American theaters in July. It will be released directly on streaming on Max, on August 9. The news comes shortly after the announcement that Chapter 2 of Horizon, whose theatrical releases were postponed indefinitely in the US, will be at the Venice Film Festival, one of the most important in the second half of the year. The film will be shown on September 7, out of competition. There is still no release date for this film in Brazil.

Costner released the first chapter of Horizon: An American Saga on June 28, 2024, in the US and the second chapter would come on August 16. With that, Costner would have two films in less than three months in theaters. Chapter 1, however, grossed just $23 million on a budget of over $100 million, and the studio is waiting to release the sequel in the hopes that more people will see the original and be drawn to the sequel.

“Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema have decided not to release Horizon: Chapter 2 on August 16 to give audiences a greater opportunity to discover the first part of Horizon in the coming weeks, including on PVOD and [later] on Max. We thank our exhibition partners for their continued support as moviegoers in the U.S. discover the film in its theatrical run,” said a statement from New Line (via THR).

Horizon promises to be an epic that will chart 15 years of territorial expansion and settlement of the American West, before and after the Civil War that took place between 1861-1865. "Horizon tells the story of this journey honestly and straightforwardly, highlighting the characters' points of view and the consequences of their life and death decisions," says Costner. The setting is familiar to Costner, who used the era for his Oscar-winning Dances with Wolves. The project is a passion project for the star, and he sold his 25-acre home in Santa Barbara, California, to help finance Horizon, putting his own money on the line.

Costner has already shot both films but has four scripts written. He hopes to begin filming Chapter 3 of Horizon soon. Costner stars in the film alongside Jamie Campbell Bower (Stranger Things), Sienna Miller (American Sniper), Thomas Haden Church (Spider-Man 3), Danny Huston (Yellowstone), Sam Worthington (Avatar), Michael Rooker (Guardians of the Galaxy), Jena Malone (The Hunger Games), Alejandro Edda (Narcos: Mexico), Will Patton (Silo), Isabelle Fuhrmann (Orphan), Luke Wilson (The Royal Tenenbaums), Abbey Lee (Mad Max: Fury Road) and Tatanka Means (Reservation Dogs).

Why is Kevin Costner leaving Yellowstone?

It was precisely the long filming of Horizon that caused Costner's relationship with Taylor Sheridan, creator of Yellowstone, to sour. Costner, according to reports, did not want to shoot the number of days agreed with the production company to prioritize his film, and this led Sheridan and the CBS network to decide to end the series and prepare a sequel that will star Matthew McConaughey in the lead role.
