Channing Tatum's cameo as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine was certainly very satisfying for those who closely follow the actor's career and know how much he wanted to play the hero. That's exactly why Shawn Levy decided to invite him to the film. "I'm obsessed with Channing as Gambit in this movie. What's behind it, first of all, is the decade of Channing wanting to play this role and the decade of him almost getting to do it at Fox," the director explained in an interview with Variety.
He also revealed that he was almost responsible for directing the never-mentioned film. "I know this personally because, at the time, I was one of 25 directors who met with Channing to direct the Gambit movie for Fox and it never happened. So we decided to bring Gambit to this movie, we knew it would be advantageous for Channing," Levy detailed. The filmmaker also explained the actor's improvisation to bring the most 'French' accent that we hear in the film.
"We scripted a lot of these almost nonsensical jokes. But then Channing added a Cajun and French flavor. To this day, there are some things he says, like when he sees Hugh drinking and throws the letter in his direction, he says something like 'cooyain-zwah', which I don't know what it is to this day. When Deadpool says: 'That's not a word. Who's your dialect coach... the Minions?'. That's basically all of us on set. We loved it," he concluded. “He's one of the coolest, smartest characters in comics and still largely unexplored. I want more— and from what I saw in theaters, you do too.” pic.twitter.com/KSXLUsU4Tk
