Netflix has quietly canceled the plans for the sequels and the animated series of Army of the Dead, as reported by The Wrap. This franchise, which initially seemed destined to expand with several new productions, has seen a drastic change of direction after the release of Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon.
After Rebel Moon and Army of the Dead, Zack Snyder's next big project for Netflix is Twilight of the Gods
Director Zack Snyder and producer Deborah Snyder had big ambitions for Army of the Dead. In addition to the original film, which was successfully released on Netflix, an animated prequel called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas and a sequel called Planet of the Dead were planned. However, after the release of the Rebel Moon films in 2024, which were not well received by audiences or critics, Netflix decided to abandon these projects. Despite the initial success, which had garnered excellent viewing figures with 75 million households watching the film in its first 28 days on the platform, Netflix reconsidered its investment in future projects related to the franchise.
Army of the Dead had established itself as one of the most viewed original films on Netflix, but this was not enough to ensure the continuity of related projects. In an interview with The Nerd Queens, Snyder mentioned some technical issues that slowed down the development of the animated series Lost Vegas. Despite all the scripts and animatics being completed, along with the voice recordings, the series never saw the light of day in its final form.
Snyder also revealed that a character from Rebel Moon was supposed to make an appearance in Lost Vegas, but this crossover never came to fruition. Looking ahead, Zack Snyder will continue to work on other projects. After Rebel Moon, his next big project for Netflix is Twilight of the Gods, due in September 2024. He is also in talks with Warner Bros. to direct and produce a TV series based on 300. Snyder has also expressed interest in making a smaller film, without complex visual effects, as he said in a recent podcast with CinemaBlend.
