The series will tell the story of Hernandez's life, from his successes in the NFL to his tragic end. FX has released the first teaser for the new anthology series American Sports Story, which takes a disturbing look at the dramatic fall of NFL superstar Aaron Hernandez. This project represents an extension of Ryan Murphy's acclaimed American Story franchise, which already includes American Horror Story, American Crime Story, and American Horror Stories.
The new American Sports Story series, developed by Stu Zicherman (Alaska Daily), focuses on Hernandez's tragic parable, based on the podcast Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc. from The Boston Globe and Wondery. Consisting of eight to ten episodes, the anthology will explore every aspect of the former tight end's life, from his rise in the NFL to his fall, through his complex personal identities, his relationship with his family, his sports career, and his tragic suicide in prison at the age of 27.
The story of Aaron Hernandez is well known to American football fans: after a promising career at the University of Florida and the New England Patriots, Hernandez was sentenced to life in prison in 2015 for the murder of Odin Lloyd. The series American Sports Story will not be limited to this event, but will also address the accusation of double homicide in 2012, in which Safiro Furtado and Daniel de Abreu were involved. Although Hernandez was acquitted of the latter crime, a few days later he took his own life.
American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez stars Josh Andrés Rivera (The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes) in the title role. Alongside him, Patrick Schwarzenegger (Gen V) plays Hernandez’s former teammate, quarterback Tim Tebow. Other cast members include Tony Yazbeck (Billions) as University of Florida coach Urban Meyer, Jake Cannavale (The Offer) as one of Hernandez’s love interests, and Lindsay Mendez (Station 19) as Tanya Singleton, Hernandez’s cousin and confidante.
