Josh Hartnett recently gave an interview to The Guardian, revealing details about his decision to walk away from Hollywood just as his career was at its peak. After starring in hit films like Pearl Harbor, Black Hawk Down, and 40 Days and 40 Nights, Hartnett left Los Angeles and returned to Montana, where he decided to take a break from the film industry.

Why Did Josh Hartnett Decide to Leave Hollywood?

Josh Hartnett explained that he didn’t want his life to be completely consumed by his work. “I didn’t want my life to be completely swallowed up by my work,” he said. “There was this idea back then that you just gave up everything. And you saw what happened to some people back then. They were destroyed by it. I didn’t want this to happen to me” However, the main reason for his departure was even more complicated. Josh Hartnett revealed that he had become the target of stalkers, with incidents that seriously put his safety at risk. “Well, I don’t want to make too much of it. There were incidents,” he said. “I had people show up at my house. People stalking me. A guy showed up to one of my premieres with a gun, claiming to be my father. He went to jail. There were a lot of things. It was a weird time.”

Josh Hartnett’s decision to avoid blockbuster roles was also influenced by his desire to find more authenticity in his career. For example, when his team set him up to meet with Christopher Nolan for the role of Batman, Hartnett chose to instead apply for a role in Nolan’s thriller The Prestige. Christian Bale ultimately landed both roles. “I realized what a missed opportunity it was to work with a guy like Chris,” Josh Hartnett reflected. “And I realized that as much as you worry about fitting your career into the things that interest you, I don’t think that’s the most important thing anymore. It’s about finding people that you really trust.”
